Muckross Abbey (also Muckross Friary , Irish Mainistir Locha Léin ) is an important church complex in the Killarney National Park in the south-west of Ireland . The abbey is about 5 km from Killarney and 1.2 km from Muckross House on Lough Leane in a park-like area in the middle of a cemetery.

The abbey was founded by Franciscans in 1340 . However, they soon gave up the facility. Donal McCarthy Mor began to restore the complex in 1448; the work should take 50 years. The buildings still preserved today mainly date from this period. In its eventful history, Muckross Abbey was damaged and rebuilt several times. The different architectural styles clearly show that Muckross Abbey was built in several sections. The youngest section of the abbey is the crossing tower, which is as wide as the nave.

The ruins of Muckross Abbey are fairly well preserved. A large yew tree in the middle of the cloister is remarkable . The complex is now part of the Killarney National Park .

Seafradh O'Donnchadha, Aodhagan O'Rathaille, Eoghan Rua O'Sulleabhain and Piaras Feiritéar are buried inside the abbey and in the adjacent cemetery. These lived in the 17th and 18th centuries and are known as the "Kerry Poets".
