James Mark Sullivan

James Mark Sullivan (born January 6, 1873 in Killarney , County Kerry , Ireland , † August 15, 1935 in Saint Petersburg , Florida ) was an American diplomat .

Life

James Sullivan was a nephew of Timothy Sullivan . He studies at Yale Law School , where he won the Townsend Prize . On October 10, 1910, Sullivan married in St. Munchin's, Limerick Nell O'Mara (born June 6, 1882).

Sullivan was a lawyer in New York and known for having good connections with Tammany Hall . He won the city's votes to the side of presidential candidate Woodrow Wilson at an electoral convention . With the support of US Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan , he became the US envoy to Santo Domingo .

On August 12, 1913, he was sent by Woodrow Wilson as ambassador to the Dominican Republic . On September 23, 1913, he presented his letter of accreditation to the José Bordas Valdez government . Sullivan had close ties with Frank JR Mitchell, the president of the Banco Nacional of Santo Domingo, whom he induced to embezzle government funds. Boaz Walton Long said Sullivan broke U.S. State Department rules by post-dating checks.

On June 20, 1915, he left the post of ambassador in Santo Domingo. After retiring from the post of ambassador, he married an Irish heiress and lived in Dublin . Sullivan directed the Film Company of Ireland from 1916 to 1920 . In 1916 Sullivan took part in the Easter Rising , O'Rahilly was killed and Sullivan was arrested with others in Kilmainham Gaol .

Since his death was erroneously reported from Ireland, an obituary appeared in the New York Times on August 24, 1920.

According to the State Department historian and a later obituary in the New York Times, Sullivan died in 1935. According to his 1935 obituary, he died of diabetes and was transferred to Glasnevin Cemetery .
