Fossa ( Irish : An Fosadh ) is a sprawling village and parish in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland .

Fossa is located about 6 km northwest of Killarney in County Kerry on the edge of Killarney National Park , on the N22 from Killarney to Tralee (and thus on the busy road from Killarney to Dingle Peninsula ) and on the offshore part of the Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula .

Part of Fossa is Aghadoe ( Irish : Achadh Deo , older Achadh Dá Eó ; German "Place of the two yew trees"), a townland from which one has a wide view of part of the Killarney National Park with Innisfallen Iceland in Lough Leane , the largest of the three lakes in Killarney National Park, and on the top of Ross Castle . Also part of Aghadoe are the ruins of Parkavonear Castle , an Anglo-Norman foundation from the 13th century and an old cemetery with a three-phase church ruin, built in the mid-12th century in the Romanesque style, expanded and modified in the 13th century towards the end of the 16th century. The church and the associated cemetery were once fortified, as can be seen in the ruins of the Aghadoe Tower and the fortification wall, which is still partially preserved. The tower is often mistaken for the Parkavonear Castle (Norman round tower), but the tower castle ruins are about 150 meters further south in the sloping field on a small plateau with a right-angled moat-wall system, of which small traces have been preserved.

Next to Fossa are several top-class golf courses ; The place also houses one of the few Irish youth hostels in Aghadoe House , a former manor house from the 18th century on a large garden and forest property . There are also three hotels (including Aghadoe Heights, a 5-star hotel ), various B&B accommodation options and two pubs (as of 2008).

About 2 km east of Fossa on the road to Killarney is one of the earliest branches of a continental European company in Ireland with a production facility for container cranes established by Liebherr in 1958 ; the number of employees is 560.
