Parkavonear Castle

Parkavonear Castle ( Irish Caisleán Pháirc an Mhóinéir ) is the ruin of an Anglo- Norman castle from the 13th century in the townland of Aghadoe in County Kerry, Ireland, above the lakes of Killarney . The castle was built after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169.

Surname

Parkavonear Castle is named after the townland Parkavonear (Irish páirc an mhóinéir ), which means "field of meadow" in German. Sometimes the castle ruins are also called "Parkvonear", but only the name with the "a" in the middle is used in the area.

description

The ruin is two stories high and, unlike the Anglo-Norman people, has a cylindrical floor plan. The walls are 2 meters thick and inside there is a floor area a few meters in diameter. A staircase is built into the wall that connects both floors. Today the entrance is on the lower floor, but originally there was only one on the upper floor, which allowed residents to pull in a ladder if the castle was attacked. Today only stone remains are preserved; the wooden floors and roof are rotten and have been removed.

Originally the donjon was surrounded by rectangular earthworks , of which only traces have survived.
