Louise O'Neill
Louise O'Neill (born 1985 ) is an Irish writer who mainly writes books for young people . She grew up in Clonakilty in County Cork, southwest Ireland .
life and work
O'Neill moved to New York in 2010 to do an internship at Elle Magazine . After returning to Ireland in 2011, she began work on her debut Only Ever Yours , which was published in 2014. In the same year she received the Newcomer of the Year award from the Irish Sunday Independent and the Irish Book Award in the Newcomer category and the following year the Bookseller's inaugural YA Book Prize .
Her second novel, Asking For It , was published in 2015. It reached number one on the Irish bestseller list and has won several awards, including the American Library Association's Michael L. Printz Award . The New York Times described the novel as "compelling and extremely important". A German translation of the novel was published in 2018 under the title You wanted it at Carlsen .
The film and TV rights have already been sold for both novels.
Based on her second novel, the documentary film Asking For It ?: Reality Bites was released in 2016 , in which O'Neill speaks about sexual assault and " rape culture " in Ireland.
In March 2018, her first adult novel was published under the title Almost Love and just two months later her third book for young people, The Surface Breaks , a feminist retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid .
In addition to her work as a novelist, O'Neill also writes as a freelance journalist for various Irish newspapers and magazines. In 2016, she also contributed an essay to the anthology I Call Myself A Feminist , in which young women authors explain why they see themselves as feminists.
