- The Austrian composer Florian Leopold Gassmann initiated the foundation of the Tonkünstler Society , which organized music events for the public in Vienna.
- Det Kongelige Teaters Balletskole (in German: The Ballet School of the Royal Theater) in Copenhagen is founded.
- Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges is appointed director of the Concert des Amateurs orchestra in Paris.
Operas and other stage works
- January 16 : The opera Annibale in Torino by Giovanni Paisiello is premiered in Turin.
- In January receives Johann Adolph Hasse of Maria Theresia commissioned to celebrate the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and Princess Maria Beatrice d'Este , the festival opera Il Ruggiero after a libretto by Pietro Metastasio to write. Both Hasse and Metastasio concluded their life's work with this opera.
- April 18 : The world premiere of the operetta Der Dorfbalbier by Johann Adam Hiller based on the libretto by Christian Felix Weisse takes place in Leipzig.
- June 2 : The opera Armida by Antonio Salieri based on the libretto by Marco Coltellini , based on the Armida material from the epic The Liberated Jerusalem by Torquato Tasso , has its world premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna. After its successful premiere, the work quickly spread across Europe.
- Autumn: premiere of the opera buffa in three acts L'inimico delle donne by Baldassare Galuppi (music) with a libretto by Giovanni Bertati at the Teatro San Samuele in Venice.
- October 17th : The Serenata Ascanio in Alba by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on a libretto by Giuseppe Parini is premiered with great success at the Teatro Ducale in Milan on the occasion of the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria with Princess Maria Beatrice of Este. 15-year-old Mozart wrote the music in just three and a half weeks. The opera Il Ruggiero by Johann Adolph Hasse was premiered on the same evening, but received little response.
- November 9 : The Comédie - ballet Zémire et Azor by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry based on the libretto by Jean-François Marmontel has its world premiere in Fontainebleau .
- The operas Quinto Fabio , Lucio Papirio and I visionari by the Italian opera composer Pasquale Anfossi will be premiered at the Teatro delle Dame in Rome.
