World premieres
- January / February: The opera Artaserse by Johann Christian Bach has its world premiere at the Teatro Regio in Turin. He was then commissioned to write two more operas for the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- February 11 : The opera L'olimpiade by Niccolò Jommelli based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio will be premiered at the Herzoglichen Theater in Stuttgart . Another setting of the material by Niccolò Piccinni will be premiered during the Carnival in Rome at the Teatro delle Dame .
- May: The opera Demofoonte by Niccolò Piccinni based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio has its world premiere at the Teatro Moderno in Reggio nell'Emilia. Another setting by Antonio Boroni was premiered in Senigallia in the same year.
- October 17th : The highly acclaimed world premiere of the ballet Don Juan by Christoph Willibald Gluck takes place in Vienna , for which the dancer and choreographer Gasparo Angiolini created the choreography .
- November 4th : The opera Catone in Utica by Johann Christian Bach is premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- November 5th : The opera Don Quichotte at the wedding of Comacho by Georg Philipp Telemann is premiered in Hamburg. Telemann completely reworked the libretto of the young Daniel Schiebeler for his purposes.
- December 8th : The opera Le cadi dupé by Christoph Willibald Gluck has its world premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

- Joseph Haydn becomes vice conductor in the house of the Esterházy family and composes his three symphonies Le matin , Le midi and Le soir .
- Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach publishes “ Six Sonatas for the Clavier ” in Berlin as a continuation of his sonatas from the previous year.
- Leopold Mozart records an andante and an allegro as the " Wolfgangerl Composition" , which is followed by a further allegro and a menuetto , dated December 11th and 16th respectively.
