Meinrad Spieß , actually Matthäus Spieß (born August 24, 1683 in Honsolgen , † June 12, 1761 in Irsee ) was a German composer .

Life

The farmer's son, baptized under the name of Matthäus, came to the imperial-free Benedictine Abbey of Irsee at the age of eleven , where he began his novitiate in 1701 and made his profession in 1702 (religious name: Meinrad). This was followed by a philosophical-theological course, which was completed in 1707 with the ordination of priests .

Due to his extraordinary musical talent, Father Meinrad was able to stay for three years in Munich (1709–1712), where he had a decisive musical influence as a pupil of the electoral court orchestra master Giuseppe Antonio Bernabei (1649–1732) at the court of Max II Emanuel .

After his return, Spieß was responsible for the musical design of the liturgy and festive occasions in the Irsee Abbey as music director from 1713 to around 1750 . His preserved compositions and the textbook “Tractatus Musicus Compositorio - Practicus” (Augsburg 1745), which made him known as a music scholar far beyond the limits of his sphere of activity, date to this time. Within his order, Father Meinrad held various offices in the monastery (subpriorate, priory etc.) and emerged as an organ and bell expert across the region; the disposition of the largely preserved Irsee monastery organ by Balthasar Freiwiss ( Aitrang ) from 1749/50 was largely determined by him.

In 1743 Lorenz Christoph Mizler accepted him as the only South German composer in his “ Corresponding Societät der Musicalischen Wissenschaften ”. a. also Bach , Handel and Telemann belonged. In 1750 P. Anselm Schwink was named as music director, while Spieß increasingly followed up on musical correspondence. Spieß died at the age of 78.
