- Carnival: The opera Solimano by Davide Perez has its world premiere in the Palazzo Ajuda in Lisbon. The libretto is by Giovanni Ambrogio Migliavacca . It is already the second version of his Solimano libretto .
- April 29th : The Opera seria Nitteti by Tommaso Traetta based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio has its world premiere at the Teatro Pubblico in Reggio nell'Emilia. Another setting of the work by Niccolò Piccinni will be premiered on November 4th at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- May 31 : The opera Anacréon by French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau is premiered at the Paris Opera as part of a revised version of the opera ballet Les surprises de l'Amour . The work, which has nothing in common with the composer's opera of the same name from 1754 , is in the form of a one-act acte de ballet and a libretto by Pierre-Joseph Bernard .
- November 4th : Ignaz Holzbauer's setting of Pietro Metastasio's libretto La clemenza di Tito has its world premiere at the Hoftheater in Mannheim.
- November 20 : The world premiere of the opera L'Isola disabitata by Domenico Scarlatti takes place at the Teatro San Samuele in Venice.
- December 18 : Niccolò Jommelli's setting of Pietro Metastasio's libretto Temistocle has its world premiere at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- The now lost opera Merope by Florian Leopold Gassmann on a libretto by Apostolo Zeno will be premiered in Venice.
