Jean Baptiste Masse (around 1700; † around 1757) was a French composer and cellist .

Jean Baptiste Masse was a member of the Ordinaires de la Chambre du Roi and was a member of the Vingt-quatre Violons du Roy and the Comédie-Française . Little is known about his life; It is certain that he was listed in the books of the Comédie-Française in 1752 as a cellist and double bassist.

Works

Masse has published five collections of sonatas, which, along with the works of Jean-Baptiste Barrière, are among the oldest French sonatas for cello and bc

In the foreword to the Third and Fourth Collections, Masse explicitly refers to an alternative instrumentation for bassoons, viols or violins.
