Life

Bartolomeo Cordans entered the Franciscan monastery in Venice at the age of 16 . In 1724 he left the order with a papal dispensation . He stayed in the parish of San Giacomo di Rialto in Venice, where he played the organ and taught the clergy in singing. In 1728 he began composing operas for Venetian opera houses. The scores of these operas Ormisda (1728), La generosita 'di Tiberio (1729), La Silvia (1730), Romilda (1731) and La Rodelinda (1732) have been lost, while the corresponding libretti have been preserved. From 1773 to 1734 he was maestro di coroat the Ospedaletto , one of the four renowned Venetian music schools .

In 1735, after the Mantuan Paolo Benedetto Bellinzani had left Udine , he was appointed Maestro di cappella to the Cathedral of Udine, where he received a tenure for life. Cordans set about reorganizing the cathedral school and renewed the repertoire. Since Udine, Cordans has concentrated exclusively on the composition of church and instrumental music. In addition to his around 60 masses, he also composed hymns , motets , psalm settings and litanies . He expanded the orchestra in Udine to include oboes , flutes , trombones and horns and used it on special occasions.

Cordans died on May 14, 1757 and was buried in the Church of San Francesco della Vigna in Udine. When the church was demolished in the mid-19th century, his grave was also destroyed.
