Events
The weddings of Joseph II and his brother Leopold
- January 24th : The azione teatrale Il Parnaso confuso by Christoph Willibald Gluck based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio is premiered by the Joseph II siblings in the Salon de Bataille at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna on the occasion of the wedding of Joseph II to Maria Josepha of Bavaria . Maria Amalia plays Apollon, Maria Elisabeth the muse Melpomene, Maria Karolina the Erato and Maria Josepha the Euterpe. Her brother Leopold leads the performance from the harpsichord. The three youngest children then perform a little ballet entitled Le Triomphe de l'amour , in which Ferdinand and Maria Antonia play a shepherd couple while Maximilian plays Cupid. On the following day another azione teatrale Metastasios with the title Il trionfo d'Amore will be performed with a professional ensemble . The music for the last two works is by Florian Leopold Gassmann . On January 30th, Gluck's opera Telemaco ossia L'isola di Circe will be performed .
- Of all these pieces, Il Parnaso confuso achieved the greatest success. Immediately after its premiere, Gluck and Metastasio received the order for a new work for the name day of Emperor Franz I Stephan on October 4th. Metastasio delivered the finished manuscript for La corona on April 19 and submitted it for printing. Gluck will probably begin immediately afterwards with the composition, which will be finished in early June. Due to the unexpected death of the emperor on August 18th in Innsbruck, however, the planned performance does not take place.
- August 6 : The opera Romolo ed Ersilia by Johann Adolf Hasse based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio , commissioned by the Austrian Archduchess Maria Theresa for the wedding of her son Leopold with Infanta Maria Ludovica of Spain, has its world premiere at the Court Theater in Innsbruck. The soprano Anna Lucia De Amicis sings the role of Ersilia.

- September 10th : On their European tour, the Mozarts reach The Hague, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composes his 5th symphony , which will be premiered in December. Wolferl's sister Nannerl fell seriously ill with typhus during this time and was unable to attend the concerts in The Hague.
