John Hebden also Hebdin (baptized July 21, 1712 in Spofforth near Harrogate ; died 1765 ) was an English bassoonist , gambist , cellist and composer .

Live and act

John Hebden was the son of John Hebdin of Plompton. Orphaned early, however, he had enough net worth to receive an excellent education, including extensive music education.

Hebden lived mostly in York , where he married in 1732. His compositions, written in the 1730s, were intended for a local orchestra that performed regularly in the York Assembly Rooms , a classical building designed by Richard Boyle , 3rd Earl of Burlington.

In 1744, the music historian Charles Burney mentioned Hebden's playing, which he probably heard in his position as the first cellist and bassoonist of the Vauxhall Gardens orchestra , to which he was appointed by its director Thomas Arne .

Hebden must have had a certain degree of familiarity, because the list of subscribers to his "Six Concertos in seven Parts", which were printed in 300 copies, includes names such as Charles Burney, Thomas Arne, William Boyce , Giovanni Battista Sammartini , Francesco Geminiani , Earl and Countess of Burlington, other nobles, as well as numerous professional and amateur musicians. The six concerti follow the Italian model of Geminiani or Arcangelo Corellis , during whose stay in London in 1714 Thomas Arne had violin lessons.

Works (known)

  • "Six Solos for German Flute"
  • "Six Concertos in seven Parts for four Violins, a Tenor Violin, a Violoncello with a Thorough Bass and for the Harpsichord" op. 2 (London, around 1745)

The 6 concerti were rediscovered in 1980 by the musicologist Ruzena Wood, re-edited and recorded in 1992 for the Chandos label.
