Nicola Bonifacio Logroscino (born October 22, 1698 in Bitonto , † around 1765 in Palermo ?) Was an Italian composer and conductor .

Live and act

He received his first music lessons from his uncle Pietro Logroscino, who was music director at the cathedral in Bitonto . In 1714 he came to Naples and - possibly with his brother - to the Conservatorio Santa Maria di Loreto , where he was tutored by Gaetano Veneziano (1656-1716) and his son Giovanni Veneziano (1683-1742), among others . The latter was one of the first Neapolitan composers of comic operas . In 1728 Nicola Logroscino became organist for the Archbishop of Conza . From 1731 he worked in Naples, where his first operas were written. Until around 1750 Logroscino wrote mostly operas for the less important theaters of Naples, often as pasticcio together with other composers. He had great success with L'olimpiade , which was performed in 1753 at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. There is an anonymous criticism of this, which Pier Leone Ghezzi provided with a drawing that shows Logroscino conducting an opera from the harpsichord. From 1758 he was Kapellmeister at the Conservatorio de 'figliuoli dispersi in Palermo. In autumn 1765, about a year after his death, his opera La gelosia was performed at the Teatro Grimani in Venice.

In the Essai sur la musique ancienne et modern of 1780 by the French composer Jean-Benjamin de La Borde , Logroscino was described as “Dieu du genre buffon et modèle à presque tous les compositeur du genre”. In more recent studies, however, its role has been assessed as significantly less important for the development of opera in the 18th century.
