Michel-Joseph Gebauer (* 1765 in La Fère , Département Aisne , † December 1812 ) was a French composer and Hautboist .

Live and act

Michel-Joseph Gebauer was the son of Christian Gebauer from Germany, who worked as a horn player in the marching band of the Swiss Guard in Versailles . He was the eldest of the four brothers François René Gebauer (1773–1845), Pierre-Paul Gebauer and Etienne-François Gebauer , who all made music and composed.

He received his first music and instrumental lessons from his father. At the age of 14, he joined the marching band of the Guardians , in which his father had also served, as a Hautboist. Gebauer was violist in the Royal Chapel from 1788 to 1792, but had to give up this position due to a finger injury. In 1791 he took a position as Hautboist in the orchestra of the Musique de la garde nationale de Paris ; He also played in the Théâtre Français and probably in the Théâtre Louvois Orchestra . From 1795 to 1800 he was a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris , but his position was then canceled for economic reasons. He then became music master of the guard of the 1st Consul and later the Imperial Guard . He knew how to combine the German taste introduced in France by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini with the French, as embodied by François-Joseph Gossec and Charles-Simon Catel . His more than 200 military marches were highly valued. As a member of Napoleon's private chamber orchestra , he took part in several campaigns between 1805 and 1812; from the German campaigns he brought improved wind instruments from German workshops to France. Gebauer died in 1812 while retreating from the Russian campaign .
