- February 23 : The play Le Barbier de Séville ou la Précaution inutile (Eng: 'The Barber of Seville or The Useless Caution') by Pierre Beaumarchais premieres at the Théâtre des Tuileries in Paris. It will serve as a template for several operas in later years.
- The King of Sweden Gustav III. Gustav had an opera house built on Gustav-Adolfs-Platz (Gustav Adolfs Torg) in Stockholm according to plans by the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz . The opera house is inaugurated in 1782.
