- In the spring of the year, performances at the Mannheim National Theater , the first “German national stage”, begin . The director of the theater is Theobald Hilarius Marchand, Maria Marchand's father .
- After several unsuccessful requests for leave, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart submits his resignation to Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Franz Josef von Colloredo and asks to be released from the Salzburg court orchestra.
- Samuel Arnold becomes musical director of the Theater Royal Haymarket in London.
- The theory of music by Johann Nikolaus Forkel is published in Göttingen.
- Luigi Boccherini lived from the end of 1777 to 1785 in the seclusion of Las Arenas de San Pedro, where the Infante Don Luis de Borbón retired into exile.

- January 30th : The original version of the sensitive Singspiel Lila by Johann Wolfgang Goethe is premiered on the occasion of the 20th birthday of the Duchess Luise von Sachsen-Weimar at the Weimar Liebhabertheater.
- June 19 : The premiere of Samuel Arnold's opera Polly takes place at the Little Theater in London.
- In the summer the opera Nitteti by Agostino Accorimboni based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio has its world premiere at the Teatro detto della Pallacorda in Florence.
- In the summer, has comic opera in three acts L'Armida immaginaria of Domenico Cimarosa on the libretto by Giuseppe Palomba at the Teatro dei Fiorentini premiere.
- August 3 : The comic opera Il mondo della luna ( The World on the Moon ) by Joseph Haydn is premiered at Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt. According to some sources, Carlo Goldoni wrote the libretto . According to other sources, a stranger merely edited a libretto that Carlo Goldoni wrote for the composer Baldassare Galuppi .
- August 22 : The premiere of the opera April Day of Samuel Arnold will take place on Little Theater in London.
- September 8th : World premiere of the opera Medonte, Rè di Epiro by Giuseppe Sarti at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence.
- 23 September : The world premiere of the opera Armide by Christoph Willibald Gluck based on the libretto by Philippe Quinault based on Torquato Tasso takes place at the Académie Royale de musique in Paris.
- Vicente Martín y Soler premieres his first ballet Achille in Sciro at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples .
