Giuseppe Scarlatti

Giuseppe Scarlatti , German  Josef Scarlatti (* 1718 or June 18, 1723 in Naples , † August 17, 1777 in Vienna ) was an Italian - Austrian composer .

Life

Giuseppe, by his own account a grandson of Alessandro Scarlatti and nephew of Domenico Scarlatti (but this is not certain), initially wrote operas for the stages in Rome , Naples and Venice . In 1757 he settled permanently in Vienna as a composer and piano teacher.

Largely forgotten today, Giuseppe (Josef) Scarlatti was not musically innovative, but he was a capable composer in the style of his time. Especially in his comic operas he impressed with fresh, pleasant melodies. The libretti of his over 30 operas were mostly from Pietro Metastasio ( opera seria ) or Carlo Goldoni ( opera buffa ). His work also includes three cantatas and harpsichord sonatas.

Since Domenico Scarlatti also had the first name Giuseppe, there were occasional mix-ups in later times. Arias from Giuseppe's operas Merope (Rome 1740) and Arminio in Germania (Florence 1741) were z. T. wrongly attributed to Domenico. Giuseppe's stay in Naples in 1754/55 also led to erroneous reports that Domenico Scarlatti would return there.
