- January 14th : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart meets the composer Georg Joseph Vogler on a visit to Mannheim .
- March 23 : After a five-month stay in Mannheim, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his mother arrive in Paris. Mozart can perform his ballet music Les petits riens there, but does not get any other engagements.
- March 15th : Thomas Arne is buried in St Paul's Church (Covent Garden) after a funeral service .
- March 20 : Jiří Antonín Benda leaves his post as Kapellmeister at the court of Ernst II , Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .
- March 26th : The seven year old Ludwig van Beethoven gives his first piano concerto in Cologne.
- July 3rd : Anna Maria Mozart , the mother of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, dies at 10 p.m. in Paris. The young Mozart then lived for a few months in an apartment owned by Baron Melchior Grimm , where Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, has also lived for two years.
- August 1st : The first publication of the drinking song To Anacreon in Heaven with the text by Ralph Tomlinson and the melody John Stafford Smith takes place in London . The American national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner will emerge from this melody with new lyrics by Francis Scott Key .
- August 3 : The Teatro alla Scala in Milan opens after a construction period of only 23 months as the successor to the Teatro Regio Ducale , which burned down in 1776, with the opera L'Europa riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri .
- August 27 : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart meets Johann Christian Bach in Paris.
- September 26th : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart begins his return journey to Salzburg to take up the vacant position of court organist. The journey takes him via Strasbourg, Mannheim, Kaisersheim and Munich.

- January 27 : Niccolò Piccini's first French opera, Roland , premieres at the Paris Opera.
- January : World premiere of the opera Antigono by Anton Adam Bachschmidt based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio in Eichstätt at the court of Raymund Anton von Strasoldo .
- February 17th : Ignaz Umlauf's Die Bergknappen is the first Singspiel by a local composer to be performed in Vienna.
- March 28 : Premiere of the opera Le jugement de Midas by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry at the Palais-Royal in Paris.
- April 4th : Premiere of the opera La clemenza di Scipione by Johann Christian Bach in the King's Theater .
- July 24th : The world premiere of the opera Lo sposo burlato by Giovanni Paisiello takes place at the Russian court in St. Petersburg .
- August 3 : World premiere of the opera “L'Europa riconosciuta” by Antonio Salieri at La Scala in Milan . Salieri wrote his major opera seria especially for the inauguration of the opera house.
- November 20 : World premiere of the opera Les fausses apparences ou L'Amant jaloux by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry in the Palace Theater of Versailles .
- December 27 : World premiere of the opera La scuola de 'gelosi by Antonio Salieri at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice .
- The comic opera Martin Velten by Carl Christian Agthe will be premiered in the Theater im Gildenhaus in Reval .
