Americus Backers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dutchman Americus Backers (* around 1740; † after 1778) is considered to be the inventor of an early English piano mechanism in which the strings are not plucked as with the harpsichord , but are struck with a hammer. Backers worked in London between 1763 and 1778 and developed his mechanics probably around 1772. It was taken up by John Broadwood (1732-1812) and his apprentice Robert Stodart (1748-1831).
