Jean-Frédéric Edelmann

Jean-Frédéric Edelmann ( Johann Friedrich Edelmann , born May 5, 1749 in Strasbourg , † July 14, 1794 in Paris ) was an Alsatian harpsichordist and composer .

Life

Edelmann, who came from a Protestant family of organ and harpsichord builders, studied law and music with his friend Philippe-Frédéric de Dietrich , the son of his patron Baron De Dietrich , at the Protestant University of Strasbourg . Edelmann lived in Paris from 1774 to 1789, initially in the house of a Baron Bagge. He earned his living as a pianist and piano teacher, where he had contact with Christoph Willibald Gluck , among others . His piano students included Étienne-Nicolas Méhul and Jean-Louis Adam .

At the beginning of the French Revolution in 1789, Edelmann was appointed administrator of the Bas-Rhin department and his friend de Dietrich was appointed mayor of Strasbourg. On July 14, 1794 Edelmann was guillotined in Paris as head of the Strasbourg Jacobins .

Edelmann composed two operas , an oratorio "Esther", which was performed at the Concert spirituel in 1781 , numerous arietas for harpsichord, arias and a number of collections of chamber music for harpsichord and accompanying instruments.
