Jean-Louis (Johann Ludwig) Adam (born December 3, 1758 in Muttersholtz , Alsace , † April 8, 1848 in Paris ) was a French composer , piano teacher and piano virtuoso .

Life

Louis Adam learned to play the harp and violin at an early age . He received organ lessons in Strasbourg from an organist named Hepp († 1800). However, from the age of 17 he devoted himself exclusively to the piano, which he learned to a large extent as an autodidact. He used the writings and works of Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach , Georg Friedrich Händel , Johann Sebastian Bach , Domenico Scarlattis , Johann Schoberts , Muzio Clementis and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . He also learned composition autodidactically from the writings of Johann Mattheson , Johann Joseph Fux and Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg . When he was 17 he came to Paris to make music. He got to know Christoph Willibald Gluck , who sponsored him. At the Concert spirituel he appeared in public with the Deux simphonies concertantes for harp, piano and violin. Since then he has worked as a piano teacher and composed. He married the daughter of a music dealer very early. She passed away after a year of marriage. He married a second time during the revolution. This time the sister of the Marquis Louvois. Neither of them were happy in this marriage and it was soon divorced. In 1797 he was appointed piano teacher at the conservatory . Initially as a second grade teacher, he was promoted to first grade teacher in 1800. In 1802 he married his student Elisa Coste, the daughter of a well-known doctor. After a year of marriage, Adolphe Adam was born on July 24, 1803. As a teacher at the conservatory, he earned a very good reputation as a piano teacher. His students included Friedrich Kalkbrenner , Charles Chaulieu , Henry Lemoine , Ferdinand Hérold and his son Adolphe Adam . In 1829 he was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor . On November 15, 1842, he retired with the title of Inspecteur général des classes de piano [inspector general of the piano classes ].
