Johannes Ringk (also Ringck; born June 25, 1717 in Frankenhain ; † August 24, 1778 in Berlin ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

Ringk made his organ studies with Johann Peter Kellner in Graefenroda and Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel in Gotha . From 1740 he was a music teacher in Berlin and from January 13, 1755 organist of the Marienkirche (St. Marien). a. Wilhelm Friedemann Bach applied. Contemporaries express their appreciation for his excellent organ playing and his free fugue playing .

In addition to his own organ works, concerts and possibly an opera, he wrote numerous copies by other masters (37 in total, 19 works from the BWV). These are often the only sources available to us today. These include Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 202 and the oldest copy of the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 . They are possibly copies from Kellner's collection (made around 1725). Today they are considered to be one of the most important sources of Bach's works.
