Friedrich August Kanne
Friedrich August Kanne (born March 8, 1778 in Delitzsch , † December 16, 1833 in Vienna ) was an Austrian composer and music writer of German origin.
life and work
Kanne first studied medicine in Leipzig and theology in Wittenberg , before he switched to music studies, including in Dresden with Christian Ehregott Weinlig . In 1801 his cantata “An die Tonkunst” was successfully performed in Leipzig. In 1804 he moved to Vienna, where he worked as a music teacher, critic and poet, and from 1821 to 1824 also as editor of the Wiener Allgemeine Musikischen Zeitung . Prince Franz Joseph Maximilian von Lobkowitz (whose piano teacher he was) and Ludwig van Beethoven were among his supporters and friends . The last few years have been marked by poverty and alcohol abuse.
Kanne was successful several times as a composer of operas, for example with “Orpheus” (1807) and “Miranda” (1811). Probably the greatest success was the magic opera "Lindane, or Die Fee und der Haarbagschneider" , which between 1824 and 1841 saw a total of 68 performances in the theater in Leopoldstadt . In addition to operas and stage music, he composed songs and duets, a mass, two symphonies and some instrumental works. He also wrote plays and poems. He also provided a variation on a waltz by Anton Diabelli (who had inspired a total of 50 contemporary composers to each write a variation on a self-composed waltz; Beethoven processed the theme in his own Diabelli variations ).
