Ortasu ( Kurdish : Robozkê ) is a Kurdish village in the Uludere district of the Şırnak province in southeastern Turkey . In 2010 the village had a total of 954 inhabitants. The original name was Robozik.
Sources of income for the villagers are smuggling and the village protection system .
Ortasu gained national fame on December 28, 2011 through a tragic event in which 34 villagers between the ages of 13 and 38 were killed by shelling of Turkish fighter planes. The villagers were on a smuggling tour with mules when the Turkish army attacked them. The army stated that the group was mistakenly believed to be a PKK unit. But there are numerous indications that speak against this claim, including a. the fact that a Turkish drone had watched the group for four hours prior to the attack, from their departure from Ortasu village. A local army commander later stated that prior to the bombing, he would have confirmed to those responsible that the people were harmless if only asked. A MP from the ruling AKP party, however, stated that it could only be a disaster “because the Turkish state would not intentionally kill its own citizens”. A final report is pending, leading to disagreements and accusations between the government and the opposition.
