Events
- The Austrian horn player Joseph Leitgeb will accompany Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on their third trip to Italy from February on, which they set out on October 24, 1772 and which will last until March 13, 1773.
- The third trip to Vienna by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold takes place from mid-July to the end of September.
- From October the Mozart family will be living on the first floor of the dance master's house in Salzburg, which had previously belonged to the Salzburg court dance master Franz Gottlieb Spöckner .

- May 28 : The opera Alceste by Anton Schweitzer with the libretto by Christoph Martin Wieland is premiered at the Hoftheater Weimar by the company of Abel Seyler .
- June 8th : The dramma giocoso La locandiera by Antonio Salieri, based on the play of the same name by Carlo Goldoni, has its world premiere with some success at the Vienna Burgtheater .
- July 26th : The world premiere of the opera L'infedeltà delusa (Love Makes Invention) by Joseph Haydn takes place in Esterháza .
- September 2 : The world premiere of the puppet opera Philemon and Baucis or Jupiter's Journey on Earth by Joseph Haydn also takes place in Esterháza.
- December 4 : The lyrical tragedy Sabinus by François-Joseph Gossec is premiered in Versailles.
- The opera La finta parigina by Domenico Cimarosa will be premiered in Naples.
