The Tanzmeisterhaus is at Makartplatz 8 in the provincial capital of Salzburg . The building, also known as Mozart's residence , is a listed building ( list entry ).

history

The building was mentioned in a document in 1617.

On August 3, 1711, the court dance master Johann Lorenz Spöckner received by decree permission to hold dance lessons for aristocrats in a house on Hannibalplatz , now Makartplatz. In the description of the soul (census) of 1713 the house was already referred to as the dance master house. His son Franz Gottlieb Spöckner (1705–1767) bought the house from his mother in 1739 and was a court dance master in succession to his father; on November 21, 1747, he was the best man for Leopold Mozart at the wedding with Anna Maria Pertl from St. Gilgen.

It was not until 1773, six years after the death of Franz Gottlieb Spöckner, that the Mozart family moved into an apartment in the Tanzmeisterhaus.

The elongated, simple two- to three-storey building was two-thirds destroyed by aerial bombs in 1944. In the remaining part of the building, the stucco decoration of the late 18th century was restored in the Tanzmeistersaal in 1956/1957. After this restoration, a Mozart memorial was set up in the Tanzmeistersaal.

The museum contains a collection of musical instruments and documents related to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's residence years 1773 to 1780 .
