Carlo Luigi Grua

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carlo Luigi Grua (also Pietragrua * around 1700 in Milan ; † April 11, 1773 in Mannheim ) was an Italian composer and conductor of the early classical period.

Life

Carlo Grua came from an Italian family of musicians and was the son of the Mannheim court organist Vincenzo Paolo Pietragrua (around 1657–1732 Mannheim), a brother of Carlo Luigi Pietro Grua . From 1733 to 1753 he was Kapellmeister of Duke Karl III. Philipp von der Pfalz at the Mannheimer Hof, responsible for all areas of court music. When Ignaz Holzbauer became Kapellmeister in 1753 , Grua was only responsible for the church music of the court. Its last surviving mass was made in 1766.

His son Franz Paul Grua (1753–1833) was first a violinist in the Mannheim orchestra and later at the Munich court, where he rose to the position of court conductor.
