- January 2nd : The funeral of Sigismund III. Christoph von Schrattenbach , Archbishop of Salzburg, is the occasion for the world premiere of Michael Haydn's Missa pro defunctis Archiepiscopo Sigismund.
- March 13 : Florian Leopold Gassmann succeeds Georg Reutter the Younger as Hofkapellmeister at the court of Emperor Joseph II in Vienna.
- June 5 : Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf is ennobled by Empress Maria Theresia .
- August : The new Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Hieronymus Franz Josef von Colloredo , appoints Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as salaried concertmaster of the Salzburg court orchestra. Mozart continues to try to escape the strict regulations of the Salzburg service and starts his third trip to Italy on October 24th, which will last until March 13th, 1773 with his father.
- Carl Stamitz is court composer for Duke Louis de Noailles in Versailles.
- Ignaz Pleyel becomes a student of Joseph Haydn .

- January 29th : The opera La fiera di Venezia by Antonio Salieri celebrates a great success at its premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna .
- May 1st : On the occasion of the enthronement of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg, Pietro Metastasio wrote the work Il sogno di Scipione , set to music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Presumably only part of the opera will be premiered at the enthronement.
- August 17th : World premiere of the comic opera Der Krieg by Johann Adam Hiller in Berlin.
- November 5th : World premiere of the opera Temistocle by Johann Christian Bach on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio at the Hoftheater in Mannheim .
- December 16 : In Milan, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Lucio Silla is premiered.
- The opera seria Alessandro nell'Indie by Pasquale Anfossi based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio has its world premiere in Rome.
- The Serenata Endimione by Johann Christian Bach has its world premiere in London .
