Raphael Courteville

Raphael Courteville , also Ralph Courteville , Cortevil , Courtaville and Courtivill , (* 1675 or 1676 ; † June 1772 ) was an English singer, organist and composer.

Life

He was initially the choirboy and singer of the Chapel Royal and in 1691 was appointed first organist at St. James in Westminster, which he kept for 81 (!) Years. However, from 1753 he received the permanent help of an assistant. A hymn “St. James ”(1697), he also composed a number of songs and arias, but also instrumental music, including 6 sonatas. Together with Henry Purcell (and other composers) he wrote the music for the opera Don Quixote on a libretto by Thomas d'Urfey .
