Around 1882, three sisters from the Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vinzenz von Paul, with the help of donations, built a villa on Scharnhorststrasse with land in 1865 to set up the hospital there. The renovation and expansion were carried out by the architect Christoph Hehl . During the expansion, a two-aisled chapel with groined vaults was created on the garden side on the ground floor . The hospital chapel was also used by the Catholic community in the zoo district . In 1883, a nursing facility was opened in the building under the name of St. Vinzenzstift , where 70 patients could be treated .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the facility was renamed the Sankt Vinzenz Hospital . In 1904 there was an expansion on Kirchwender Straße, so that the number of beds increased to 160; around 1930 there was an expansion to 200 beds. During the air raids on Hanover in World War II , aerial bombs caused serious damage to the hospital, but the hospital continued to operate.

In 1972 the Vinzenkrankenhaus gave up its headquarters on Scharnhorststrasse. The Lower Saxony State Office for Monument Preservation has had its seat there since 1979. The foundation stone for today's hospital in Kirchrode was laid in 1968; It was inaugurated in 1971. A hospice and nurses' school have been connected since 1994 .

In 2018 the last 22 Catholic women religious left the hospital. They moved into a joint retirement home in the St. Paulus nursing home at their mother house in Hildesheim .
