Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli (* around 1690 ; † 1772 in London ) was an Italian composer and violinist.

Life

Carbonelli was a pupil of Arcangelo Corelli ; he moved to London in 1719 at the invitation of John Manners, the 2nd Duke of Rutland, to serve in his service. At times he was concertmaster in the Handel Opera Orchestra.

Carbonelli left a collection of 12 violin sonatas with figured bass. This is based on Corelli's style, the collection is dedicated to his patron, the Duke of Rutland. In the course of his time in England he increasingly neglected playing the violin in order to turn to the more profitable trade in Italian wines.

Antonio Vivaldi dedicated a Concerto per Violino to him (RV 366).
