Carl Gottlieb Bellmann (born September 6, 1772 in Muskau , Oberlausitz , † December 24, 1861 in Schleswig ) was a German organist and composer.

Life

The son of a master mason was initially a cellist in the court chapel of Count Erdmann von Pückler, who however appointed him music director in the 1790s. Mediated by the count, he and his brother Adolph came to work as cellists in the theater and opera house of Landgrave Carl von Hessen in Gottorf Castle near Schleswig. On December 9, 1800, Bellmann married Friederica Christina Krause, who was almost two years his junior (on the common tombstone: Kranse) from Kiel. In Schleswig he composed the melody of the first sung in 1844 and in the revolution against Denmark to today's national anthem has become Schleswig-Holstein -Liedes Schleswig-Holstein meerumschlungen .

Bellmann was buried in the cemetery of St. John's Monastery on the Holm in front of Schleswig. The organ on which Bellmann is said to have composed his most famous work can still be seen in the remter of the monastery. The Chemnitz-Bellmann-Lodge of the German Druid Order takes care of the tomb.

For the 50th anniversary of the premiere of Schleswig-Holstein meerumschlungen , a monument by the sculptor Paul Peterich was erected in Schleswig , the base bears the likeness of Bellmann and Chemnitz , who wrote the text of the Schleswig-Holstein song. The memorial stands at the Schützenkoppel, the place where the Schleswig-Holstein song was first performed on July 24, 1844. In Schleswig a street is named after Bellmann.
