Georg Friedrich Schmahl
Georg Friedrich Schmahl the Elder (born November 15, 1700 in Heilbronn , † August 26, 1773 in Ulm ) was a southern German organ builder of the Baroque era .
Life
Georg Friedrich Schmahl was one of four sons of the Heilbronn organ builder Johann Michael Schmahl , who became organ and piano builders.
In 1726 he was mentioned for the first time in the building files of the Ulm Minster , in 1729 he took over the workshop of the deceased Ulm organ builder Chrysostomus Baur . In 1731 he became a citizen of the Free Imperial City of Ulm . There he completely rebuilt the great organ of the cathedral from 1730–1735 and expanded it to 45 registers. Schmahl took care of this organ throughout his life.
According to his son, Georg Friedrich Schmahl built 45 organs, including the large organ of the Roggenburg monastery church , but mainly smaller organs for village churches in the area around Ulm and on the Swabian Alb .
Schmahl could not achieve sustainable business success because he was probably delivering too cheaply. In 1772 his house was foreclosed. Impoverished, he died in Ulm in 1773 at the age of 72.
His workshop was initially taken over by his son Johann Matthäus Schmahl , who shifted the focus of his work to piano and harpsichord construction, after whose death his other son Georg Friedrich Schmahl the Elder. J.
