The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux opens |
Events
- April 7th : The Grand Théâtre , built by Victor Louis in the style of Italian classicism , is opened in Bordeaux , which contemporaries call the largest and most beautiful theater in France. Jean Racine's drama Athalie from 1691 will be played at the festive event .
- November 5th : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart travels to Munich to take part in the world premiere of his Opera seria Idomeneo (KV 366), which he composed this year, on January 29th .
- Johann Andreas Cramer , Chancellor of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , publishes the Cramer hymnbook in Altona .
- The Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas is published for the first time in an English children's book .
- The Danish royal national anthem " Kong Christian " is sung for the first time.
- The third edition of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's music pedagogical textbook, An attempt on the true way of playing the piano, is published.

- June 5th : The opera La finta amante by Giovanni Paisiello is premiered in Mogiljow .
- June 6 : World premiere of the opera Andromaque by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry on the libretto by Louis-Guillaume Pitra at the Paris Opera.
- September 23 : The opera Adelheit von Veltheim by Christian Gottlob Neefe is premiered in Frankfurt am Main.
- December 6th : The opera Alcide al bivio by Giovanni Paisiello is premiered in Sankt Peterburg .
- By Domenico Cimarosa in Rome, the two opera Le donne rivali and Cajo Mario, in Naples, the three operas I Finti nobili, Il falegname and L'avviso ai Maritati premiered.
- The opera Cleopatra by Franz Danzi based on the libretto by Johann Leopold Neumann will be premiered at the Hoftheater in Mannheim .
