Thomas Carr (music publisher)

Thomas Carr (born March 8, 1780 in London , † April 15, 1849 in Philadelphia ) was an American music publisher, composer and organist.

Carr was introduced to the music publishing business by his father, music publisher Joseph Carr . In 1794 he followed his older brother Benjamin to the USA with his father . There he and his father opened a music publishing company in Baltimore. In 1806 he married Milcah Bell Merryman , with whom he had eight children.

In 1814 Carr arranged the lyrics of The Star-Spangled Banner to the melody of the English drinking song To Anacreon in Heaven . The first edition appeared in the same year in the publishing house operated by him and his father. For William Henry Harrison's presidential election campaign in 1840 he composed the songs Old Tippecanoe's raisin ' and Turn out! To the rescue! . He also composed several instrumental works, including an Old Russian March for piano.
