from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cramer hymn book , actually a general hymn book on royal most gracious orders for public and domestic use in the communities of the Duchy of Schleswig, the Duchy of Hollstein, the Dominion Pinneberg, the town of Altona and the County of Ranzau , first appeared in Altona in 1780 and became official at Easter 1781 introduced. Its editor was the theologian Johann Andreas Cramer , the chancellor of Kiel's Christian Albrechts University .

History and content

After the Treaty of Tsarskoe Selo in 1773, the Danish government endeavored to establish uniform structures in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein . This should also in the Lutheran Church, organized in the Generalsuperintendentur for Holstein and that for Schleswig , the previous by sovereigns Holstein and Schleswig for the ducal and royal proportions, as well as by the divided gentlemen issued for their areas hymnals by a common hymnal be replaced .

The Cramer hymn book contained 915 songs in three sections: "Time songs (morning songs, table songs, evening songs, Sunday songs, etc.), songs about the teachings of the Christian faith and songs about the virtues of Christianity". Cramer himself wrote 245 of these, mainly for the third part. Also by Klopstock and Gellert there were about 60 songs each, while many songs from earlier hymn books either no longer exist or were rewritten beyond recognition in accordance with the aesthetic and theological criteria of Enlightenment theology.

Numerous editions of the hymn book were in ecclesiastical use with only minor adjustments, until after much preparatory work (from 1860) the Evangelical Lutheran hymn book of the province of Schleswig-Holstein appeared in 1883 .

In 1786 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach published his settings of the two litanies in the hymn book, the old (No. 790) and the new litany (No. 791, by Klopstock).
