On April 7th, the English soprano Martha Ray is murdered by a jealous suitor.

Events

  • February 16 : Composer William Boyce is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral . The choirs of St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal sing at his funeral.
  • April : London Magazine reports on three-year-old child prodigy William Crotch playing the organ . At the age of 2 years and 3 months he is said to have been able to play the English national anthem on an organ constructed by his father, a carpenter.
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart begins work on the Singspiel Zaide , which, however, remains unfinished. It was not until 1866 that the fragment was first performed in Frankfurt am Main.
  • The now no longer preserved opera house in Esterházy Palace burns down, but will be rebuilt after two years.

  • World premiere of the opera L'infedeltà fedele by Domenico Cimarosa .
  • Also in 1779 Peter von Winter brought out his second opera Lenardo and Blandine in Munich.
  • Vicente Martín y Soler publishes several works: (1) Ifigenia in Aulide (opera); (2) Il re Gerone (cantata); (3) Griselda (ballet); (4) Orfeo su Monte Rodope (ballet) and (5) Artaserse (ballet).
