Events
- February 16 : Composer William Boyce is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral . The choirs of St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal sing at his funeral.
- April : London Magazine reports on three-year-old child prodigy William Crotch playing the organ . At the age of 2 years and 3 months he is said to have been able to play the English national anthem on an organ constructed by his father, a carpenter.
- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart begins work on the Singspiel Zaide , which, however, remains unfinished. It was not until 1866 that the fragment was first performed in Frankfurt am Main.
- The now no longer preserved opera house in Esterházy Palace burns down, but will be rebuilt after two years.

- January 17th : The comic opera Das Grab des Mufti or Die Zwei (Zwei) Geizigen by Johann Adam Hiller has its world premiere .
- February 14 : The world premiere of the opera Gli Astrologi immaginari ( The Conceited Astrologers ) by Giovanni Pacini takes place in Saint Petersburg.
- April 25 : The world premiere of the opera La vera costanza ( The Fluttery Lover ) by Joseph Haydn takes place in Esterház .
- May 18th : The opera Iphigénie en Tauride by Christoph Willibald Gluck has its world premiere at the Paris Opera .
- August 13 : World premiere of the opera Il Demetrio by Josef Myslivečeks based on the libretto by Pietro Metastasio at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
- September 20th : First performance of the melodrama Pygmalion by Georg Benda in Gotha.
- December 6th : The world premiere of the opera L'isola disabitata ( The Uninhabited Island ) by Joseph Haydn takes place in Esterház .
- December 14th : The opera Amadis de Gaule by Johann Christian Bach, based on the libretto by Philippe Quinault already set to music by Jean-Baptiste Lully , fails at its premiere in Paris at the Académie Royale de Musique .
- December 26th : The Teatro alla Scala in Milan opens the carnival season with Josef Mysliveček's new opera Armida.
- December 30th : The opera Aucassin et Nicolette ou Les mœurs du bon vieux temps by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry is premiered in the Palace of Versailles .
- The opera La Circe by Josef Mysliveček based on the libretto by D. Perrell will be performed in Venice at the Teatro San Benedetto

- World premiere of the opera L'infedeltà fedele by Domenico Cimarosa .
- Also in 1779 Peter von Winter brought out his second opera Lenardo and Blandine in Munich.
- Vicente Martín y Soler publishes several works: (1) Ifigenia in Aulide (opera); (2) Il re Gerone (cantata); (3) Griselda (ballet); (4) Orfeo su Monte Rodope (ballet) and (5) Artaserse (ballet).

- March 23 : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed probably for the Easter celebrations on April 4 in Salzburg Cathedral written exhibition , which years later under the name Coronation Mass gained notoriety.
