Wilhelm Lechleitner

Wilhelm Lechleitner Can. Reg. (Born May 15, 1779 in Stanzach as Johann Nepomuk Lechleitner ; † November 6, 1827 in Neustift near Brixen ) was an Austrian composer , choir regent and teacher.

Life

Wilhelm Lechleitner's main field of activity was the Augustinian canons of Neustift near Brixen.

Johann Nepomuk Lechleitner, son of a farmer and carter, entered the Augustinian Canons' Monastery in Neustift in 1797 , where he made his profession in 1801 and took the religious name Wilhelm. In 1802 he was ordained a priest and then worked in pastoral care. In 1807 he was appointed to the regens chori of the monastery, after its abolition in the same year he became a cooperator in Olang . 1808/09 he was music prefect at the Cassianeum boarding school in Brixen and from 1811 to 1816 music and grammar teacher at the grammar school in Innsbruck . With the re-establishment of the monastery in 1816, he returned to Neustift and rebuilt the monastery’s musical life as a choir regent, organist and director of the Boys' Institute.

As a composer, he created church music such as masses , oratorios and cantatas in the style of the time. His compositions, which were mainly composed between 1806 and 1827, remained unprinted, but copies were spread beyond Tyrol and were occasionally performed up to the turn of the 20th century.
