Mysterious Island is an American-Thai-German film directed by Russell Mulcahy from 2005. It is based on the book The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne .

action

The film is set in the American Civil War in 1863 . A group of prisoners of war escape from captivity in a hot air balloon. A storm causes the balloon to crash onto a desert island. Cyrus Smith is separated from the rest of the group. He is recovered from the beach and brought to recovery in a comfortably furnished cave system. There he meets Captain Nemo, who gained international fame due to India's civil war . He lives on the island with his butler Joseph. Meanwhile one of the group is eaten by a gigantic praying mantis . Cyrus asks Nemo to save his friends.

Just in time, Nemo rescues the small group. Before that, Helen found an amulet in a cave. Nemo notices this during dinner together, recognizes it as half of a symbol that can be used to find a (cursed) gold treasure. Since he abhors human weaknesses such as greed, the host and his guests quarrel. Thanks to the encouragement of his butler, Nemo lets the newcomers know and shows him his property and his inventions. In private he explains to Cyrus his intention to create a bomb to prevent wars. He wants to win him over as a helper.

In the meantime, the pirate captain Bob sets course for the island with his ship and the other half of the amulet. Cyrus decides not to cooperate with Nemo and he and his group have to leave the property. The pirates reach the island and a first reconnaissance party arrives on land. The pirates soon quarrel and the young pirate Blake is beaten down. The group wants to orientate themselves on the rivers to get to the beach, but is attacked by a giant scorpion. After his successful escape, a mysterious stranger shows him the way to the beach. There they decide to make a home in a rock.

Helen is kidnapped into his nest by a huge raven. There she is rescued by Blake and the mysterious stranger. The two join the group and the latter identifies himself as the former pirate Atherton, brother of pirate captain Bob. He can interpret the amulet correctly and Cyrus decides to bring it back to its place of discovery so that the pirates do not encounter the group. Unfortunately, there is a confrontation with the pirates who successfully kidnap Helen. However, the group manages to free their friend and after a battle on the ship they escape. On the run, however, Blake is shot by Bob.

Bob lets his pirates attack the coast, but is successfully repulsed. Joseph is killed in the battle. Nemo manages to destroy the pirate ship and Bob is pulled down by the Kraken . Pencroff, who has got hold of both amulets, goes on a search for the gold. He actually finds something in a cave, but is attacked by giant spiders. Neb, who noticed the absence of Pencroff in the camp and therefore went on a search, succeeds in driving the spiders away with a rifle. However, he is sneakily attacked by a spider. Pencroff manages to save him, but loses his life in the process. Shortly afterwards he was buried in front of the cave. Nemo appears and informs him that his friend Joseph has passed away and advises them to leave the island immediately, as the volcano is about to erupt. The group manages to get into a boat and successfully flees to sea. Nemo decides to go under with the island and its inventions.

background

The film is based on Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island , which has previously been filmed. The film was shot in Amphoe Mueang Krabi , Thailand . The film was nominated for the 2006 Saturn Award in the category of best television film. It is broadcast as a two-parter on German television.

criticism

"Lifeless monster opera with moments of trash"

TV Spielfilm describes the film as “boring, badly tricked and stolen anyway”. The statement refers to the feature film The Mysterious Island from 1961, which is based on the same book and, in contrast to the literary model, integrates the giant animals into the plot.

Rotten Tomatoes only rates the film with 32%.
