action

Detective John Prudhomme is called to the scene of a brutal murder in Chicago . The bleeding victim's right arm was cut off. On the window the police find a puzzling message written in blood: "He is coming" Prudhommes partner Andrew Hollinsworth provides further facts: The victim was Peter Belcour, 33 years old, owner of a fishing boat. During the autopsy, the investigators found the Roman number CXIX and the imprint of a key on the back of the corpse. The key fits a locker that holds a blossom from the bottle tree . A specimen of this plant is in the Botanical Garden and there the police find a second murder victim who is missing the left arm and who has the Roman number MMCDXXVII carved into the body. Matthew Leeson, 33, who was murdered before Belcour, was a financial clerk. According to the laboratory, the blood on the window comes from a lamb. Meanwhile, Prudhomme thinks about the accidental death of his little son Michael a year ago.

A third murder victim is discovered in a gloomy shelter for the homeless. The head of the dead man, who is placed on a toilet, was cut off. It's a long haired man named James Ordway. Prudhomme recognizes that the first names and numbers in the first two victims point to two passages in the Bible: Peter 1:19 and Matthew 24:27. The names and professions of the murder victims are reminiscent of the apostles . Like Jesus, they were 33 years old when he died and each was killed on a Friday. From this, Prudhomme concludes that the perpetrator wants to assemble the body of Christ from the missing body parts and to bring about the resurrection on time for Easter . As Easter is getting closer, there is little time left to search for the serial killer.

At home Prudhomme meets the pastor, but he doesn't want anything more to do with the church and his relationship with a woman Sara is also strained. An agent Wingate from the FBI introduces himself at the station , who has had access to the files but cannot add much to the case. A fax points to the voice of a prophet and tells Prudhomme to spread the pure truth before the end of the Boanerges; the key to the mountain lies in the third. Ordway's stomach contained olives, and Prudhomme understands the reference to the Mount of Olives . In the late evening he visits the priest to learn more about the Boanerges. The Sons of Thunder were the sons of Zebedee, Jacobus and Johannes. Prudhomme concludes that Ordway's brother John will be the next victim and drives to his studio. But he's too late.

John's left leg was cut off and he bled to death. Since Prudhomme can still see the leg near the dead man, he realizes that the murderer is still in the house. In the chase the perpetrator Hollinsworth overwhelmed with a Taser and sends it disguised to Prudhomme, who accidentally shoots him in the left leg with a mask. The leg has to be amputated and is stolen from the hospital a little later. Prudhomme meets with Wingate again. When he returns to the station, he receives an audio message from the perpetrator. The detective is said to feel remorse at the death of his wife. He's racing home to where a dead woman lies on the floor. But it's not Sara, but Jenny who was visiting.

The police released the recording of the tape. Dolores Koontz then reports from a cheap hotel. She refers the investigators to Mr. Breslauer, but he is blind and the perpetrator only paid for his vote. At the same time, the fifth murder victim is found in a slaughterhouse - his right leg is missing. Prudhomme states that each victim received five silver coins, with the necessary six corpses that results in 30 pieces of silver . Atonement should therefore be the motive. A colleague shows Prudhomme the files of the murder of a 33-year-old man in Tennessee two years ago who had his head cut off. The file came from the FBI, whereupon the angry Prudhomme agent visits Wingate.

It turns out that the alleged FBI agent the detective knew wasn't Wingate at all, but the wanted serial killer. Judge Seers refuses to make an arrest on the grounds that the false FBI agent is charged with mere presumption. The police have only six hours left of the 48-hour deadline to find more evidence. A similar case in Tennessee indicates that the killer is named Gerald Demus, but the deadline has passed. Demus is released and flees despite the shade at the train station. Three months ago he was still in a mental hospital. Now he kills the sixth victim. He takes the torso of 33-year-old Thomas with him.

In a magazine report about the series of murders, Prudhomme notices an open window in the house of the first crime scene. There Demus put his Jesus together from the body parts and hung it on a cross. In another room there is a video showing recordings of the corpse Jesus. Prudhomme notices that the murderer still lacks the heart of a child born to a woman named Maria on Easter Vigil . The police find a suitable birth, but Demus gets to the hospital faster and grabs the baby. When confronted with Prudhomme on the roof of the hospital, he threatens to drop the baby. Prudhomme shoots the murderer and saves the baby, whose mother gives him a cross. Prudhomme takes a break and Hollinsworth works on his return to the police force with a prosthesis.

criticism

Lexicon of international films : Macabre psychological thriller that never reaches the intensity of the clearly cited role models, but seeks its success in shamelessly exhibited scenes of violence. The characters remain contourless in spite of the in-depth nature, and the religious motivation is artificial and meaningless. A weak genre story without any originality, but in a sloppy staging.

background

  • The film was released directly on DVD in Germany.
  • The budget for the film was $ 10 million.
