action

Mathayus wants to avenge the death of his father at the hand of Sargon, who is now king of Akkad , and for this goes into the service of the royal bodyguard. After he finishes his training, he is hired by Sargon to kill Noah - his own brother. Mathayus refuses, frees his brother and flees the city. But a magic arrow follows the two and finally kills Noah.

Mathayus then boarded a ship to Egypt with his childhood friend Layla . There he wants to search for the spear of Osiris, which he believes can break through the black magic of Sargon and thus its defense. A fellow traveler, the Greek poet Aristophanes (Ari), explains to Mathayus and Layla that the spear only kills Egyptian creatures and is therefore unsuitable against Sargon. The sword of Damocles, however, would have an effect. Mathayus and Layla then travel to Greece , accompanied by Ari , where they want to enter the underworld in search of the sword . On the way there, the trio falls into a trap and finds themselves among several men who were left as an offering to the mythical Minotaur . Some of the victims are mercenaries who owe Mathayus' father allegiance and therefore help the three in the fight against the Minotaur. With the help of the Chinese prisoner Fung, Mathayus, Layla and Ari finally succeed in victory.

The grown group now travels to the underworld, where they are attacked by the goddess Astarte . Layla and Astarte fight each other while Fung and Ari look for the sword. After finding it, Astarte tries to send Layla to hell, but Mathayus can save her and they all return to the human world together.

Astarte orders Sargon to get her sword back, and he asks in return for more power over the black magic. When the group reaches Akkad, Sargon activates a machine that pumps oil into the water supply. The mixture of oil and water begins to flow through statues into the city, where it is then set on fire.

Mathayus uses the sword of Damocles to fight his way to Sargon, but finds his father. When it turns out that Sargon is hiding behind it in disguise, he uses the confusion to his advantage and disarms Mathayus. Ari picks up the sword and hands it to Sargon, revealing that he has been bribed with riches. However, it quickly becomes clear that the sword presented to Sargon is just a cheap forgery. Ari finally gives Mathayus the real sword, allowing him to put Sargon into distress. The latter then claims that Mathayus, as a member of his bodyguard, is obliged to be loyal to him and therefore cannot kill him. Mathayus then burns the tattoo of the scorpion warriors off his arm, while Sargon retreats into the shadows.

For the final confrontation, Sargon transforms into a huge, black, almost invisible scorpion. Ultimately, Mathayus kills the Scorpion King while Fung and Layla put out the fires in the city. Astarte informs Mathayus that she will show him no mercy, but he is relatively unimpressed. After receiving medical treatment from Layla, Mathayus finally wakes up in bed. Layla tells him that he has acquired the right to rule the king, but he refuses. Instead, he wants to go on more adventures for the time being.
