The CR series SS3 ( Chinese 韶山 3 , Pinyin Shaoshan 3 ) are AC electric locomotives of the Chinese state railways with the Co'Co ' wheel arrangement, which are intended for use in front of passenger and freight trains. The output of the SS3 is 4800 kW. The SS3 is a heavy six-axle electric freight locomotive and was designed and built by the CSR plant in Zhuzhou . Furthermore, the SS3 was manufactured by the locomotive factories in Ziyang and Datong .
The Zhuzhou plant and the Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute designed the SS3 in December 1977 on the basis of the SS1, based on the experiences from the SS2 and under the influence of Western technology. The first locomotive was presented on December 30, 1978. At the beginning of 1979, after a few minor modifications, the SS3 was sent for a test run and in 1980, after further modifications, it was evaluated again. The test result showed that the SS3 met the design criteria and can be used for timetable operation. The locomotive performed satisfactorily after 210,000 kilometers.
