Anton Römer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anton Josef Römer (born February 28, 1724 in Brno , † July 14, 1779 in Graz ) was an Austrian organ builder from Bohemia .

Life

Anton Josef Römer, son of the organ builder Andreas Josef Römer (1704–1750), came to Graz around the middle of the 18th century and worked as a journeyman for the organ builder Johann Cyriak Werner . After his employer died in 1747, he married the widow on April 19, 1750 and continued the organ building workshop. After the death of his wife, he married a Theresia Gottier in 1757.

Römer was an important Rococo organ builder in Graz . Because of the competition between two other flourishing workshops in Graz, he moved his main field of activity to Croatia around 1760, but was also active in western Hungary and in what is now Slovenia. He returned to Graz around 1770 and was commissioned to build the Graz cathedral organ . In Austria, only the organ in Frauenberg (in the Mürz Valley) and a number of cases such as the one in the Rein collegiate church have survived from Römer .
