The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church Maria Rehkogel is located in the village of Frauenberg in the market town of Sankt Marein in the Mürz Valley in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in Styria . The parish church of Mary in the seven pains belongs to the deanery of Bruck an der Mur in the diocese of Graz-Seckau . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

According to a pilgrimage legend, after a fleeing deer hid in a tree, a picture of Vespers was found in a tree hollow at a magnificent altitude on a ridge in the foothills of the Fischbacher Alps southeast of Kapfenberg . Another legend tells of three farmers who found a Vesper picture next to a grazing deer. In 1354 a chapel was built, where a wooden miraculous image with a mourning of Mary, depicting a deer and three peasants at Mary's feet, was displayed. The year 1354 on the north-western wall of the nave probably denotes the former location of the chapel.

The pilgrimage church was built from 1489 to 1496, for which the city council of Bruck an der Mur ainen commissioned good manual stainmeters from Praunau . He made the plans in the late Gothic style, which is part of the Salzburg-Bavarian building tradition. The four-bay nave is accompanied on both sides by special chapels, the first two bays of the formerly shorter nave with twice the depth. The rib formation of the nave vault with eight-sided diamond stars, known as Wechselberger figuration , can also be found in the parish church of St. Stephan in Braunau am Inn , where the stonemason and master builder came from. The protruding strong tower in the west with a stepped portal and a stair tower is late Gothic. From 1682 to 1688, a three-axis organ loft with adjoining chapel lofts with richly carved parapets with acanthus crowns was installed. The former choir, now a retracted nave with a third and fourth yoke and a 4/8 end, was broken up at the head of the choir in 1769 and expanded by Michael Rothmayer to include a baroque three-bay, square-vaulted choir with a broad chancel.

Furnishing

The church furnishings include late works by the sculptor Veit Königer . The delicate rococo pulpit with figures of the Christian virtues and the oratorio window in the choir were created by Jakob Peyer in 1773. The organ with its rococo case was created by Anton Josef Römer (born February 28, 1724 Brno, † July 14, 1779 Graz) between 1774 and 1775 . Martin Hilger cast a bell in 1581.
