Franciscus Volckland , also Franz (born June 5, 1696 in Berlstedt , † December 23, 1779 in Erfurt ) was a German organ builder .

Life

Volckland was Johann Georg Schröter's journeyman in Erfurt. It is not certain whether he had previously studied with the organ builder Johann Conrad Vockerodt from Berlstedt . In 1716 he went to the Lortzing organ workshop in Ohrdruf , but returned to Erfurt in 1718. There he became "beer owner", d. that is, he was allowed to brew and serve beer. He also ran a timber and fruit trade and was a committed citizen of the city.

However, the privilege as an organ builder requested by Volckland was not granted to him. His teacher Schröter already had such a privilege and was dependent on it, while Volckland could get by without building an organ. Already during his apprenticeship with Schröter there had been arguments between the two, which now intensified because of the direct competition with each other.

Volckland married in 1722 and, after the death of his first wife in 1768, a second time at the age of 77. However, he had no children.

Some organs from Volckland are still preserved today and testify to the quality of his workshop. In addition, several years after the new organ was built, he was entrusted with alterations and extensions to it, which speaks for its reliability. According to Jakob Adlung , he built valves in Zimmersupra with tail screws that were easier to remove. In Mühlberg he used hammered tin. Both indicate his extensive skills as an organ builder.

It is uncertain whether the organ builder Nicolaus Weißhaupt can be considered his pupil.
