St. Jacobus Church

The St. Jacobus Church is the main church in Zimmersupra in the Gotha district . It belongs to the Protestant church district of Erfurt , Bindersleben community . The building is a listed building .

history

A previous Romanesque building was built in the 13th century . The churchyard was surrounded by a defensive wall that was significantly higher than it is today. In 1494 a new building was built, of which the mighty west tower ( defensive tower ) of the church with the preserved, added choir arch is still preserved. The nave was on the other side of the tower.

In 1725 (year in the lintel), the current nave was rebuilt in the Baroque style east of the tower. It received a polygonal choir closure and a mansard roof . The tower was raised by a bell storey and got a slate dome with a lantern . The interior received a rich, uniformly designed baroque interior with a pulpit altar and a painted double gallery . The choir was decorated with a ceiling painting depicting the Last Judgment as well as foliage and bandwork ornaments in the coves . In 1738 a new organ was installed .

In 1966 the painting was last renovated. In 1992 the church had to be closed by the building authorities. With the special commitment of the church elder Gisela Baumbach, the church was thoroughly restored from 1996 to 2010 under the direction of the Erfurt architect Käthe Menzel-Jordan at a cost of around € 1.5 million. The parish, the friends' association, the church district, the Free State of Thuringia and the State Monuments Office were involved. The German Foundation for Monument Protection committed itself with 100,000 euros. In 1998/99 the organ was also revised and its original sound condition restored.

Since 2016 the church has been the venue for the summer concerts project in Erfurt village churches of the Erfurt Chamber Music Association .
