Joseph Garnier (composer)

Joseph Garnier (* unknown; † October 12, 1779 in Strasbourg ) was a French composer and conductor .

Life

From February 1751, Joseph Garnier was entrusted with training the choirboys at the Notre-Dame collegiate church in Beaune . He was also contractually bound to deliver a mass, psalm settings, motets, hymns and Magnificat from his own pen every year. In June 1760 he was appointed Kapellmeister at the Strasbourg Cathedral , succeeding Paul de Villesavoye (1683–1760) . It may be that Nicolas-Joseph Hüllmandel one of his students. Franz Xaver Richter succeeded Garnier on April 24, 1769.

Garnier composed primarily church music, his 30 or so masses are partly a cappella , partly with orchestral accompaniment. In his motets for 5-part choir, solos, organ and orchestra, Garnier followed the models of the French grand motets , for example by Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville .
