Franz Xaver Richter , also František Xaver Richter (born December 1, 1709 in Holleschau , Moravia , † September 12, 1789 in Strasbourg ) was a Moravian singer (bass), composer and important representative of the Mannheim school .

Life

Already a well-known and respected bass player, Richter was Vice-Kapellmeister in the service of Prince Abbot Anselm Reichlin from Meldegg zu Kempten in the Allgäu from 1740 to 1747 . During this time his “Kemptener Te Deum” was written in 1742, and six of his symphonies were published in Paris . Since 1747 he was a composer, violinist and singer (bass) in the famous Mannheim court orchestra of Elector Karl Theodor . In 1769 he followed Joseph Garnier as Kapellmeister of the Strasbourg Cathedral , where in his final years Joseph Haydn's most famous student Ignaz Pleyel was his deputy. In France he was called François-Xavier Richter . According to a letter from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to Leopold Mozart (dated November 2, 1778, during the Austrian composer's stay in the city) he was also known as a heavy drinker .

In Franz Xaver Richter's works, stylistic features of the baroque are combined with gallant elements . He was one of those masters of the Mannheim School who were important for the beginnings of the pre-classical symphony .

Well-known pupils of Richter's were Carl Stamitz , František Xaver Pokorný , Joseph Martin Kraus and Ferdinand Fränzl (1767–1833).

He was buried in the Sankt-Gall-Friedhof in Strasbourg-Königshoffen.
