Gennaro Manna
Gennaro Manna (born December 12, 1715 in Naples , † December 28, 1779 there ) was an Italian composer of the Neapolitan school .
Life
Gennaro Manna was a son of the composer Giuseppe Manna and Caterina Feo, a sister of the well-known composer Francesco Feo . He studied with his uncle at the Conservatorio S. Onofrio a Capuana . His first opera Tito Manlio was performed in Rome in 1742. Gennaro Manna was Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Naples from 1744 and later also at the Church of SS Annunziata . In 1755, after the death of Francesco Durante , head of the Conservatorio di S. Maria di Loreto , Manna shared the leading role with the previous “secondo maestro” Pietro Antonio Gallo (around 1695–1777). During this time Antonio Sacchini and Giuseppe Giordani were among his students.
Between 1742 and 1761 Gennaro Manna composed 13 operas, mostly opera seria for various Italian theaters, 10 oratorios and more than 150 sacred works, mostly with instrumental accompaniment.
Other composers in the family were a cousin Cristoforo Manna and his nephew Gaetano Manna (1751-1804), the latter was his successor at SS Annunziata and under Gennaro Manna “secondo maestro di capella” of the cathedral. He mainly wrote sacred music.
